Waiting periods for global medical health insurance are common practice. A waiting period is the length of time from when you join the plan, to when the specific treatment is covered. Almost all international medical insurers put a waiting period on the coverage of certain conditions, so it is important to make sure you check what they are when you look at health insurance quotes.

Maternity waiting periods are standard practice and every global medical heath insurance plan will have one. They can be any length but the shortest on offer is 10 months. This means that after 10 months on the plan you will be able to claim for all maternity related treatment including pre-natal check ups. You should be sure that you clearly understand the particular maternity waiting period implemented on your plan when you are reviewing health insurance quotes so that there will be no surprises if you go in for treatment. Some global medical heath insurance plans will specify that the waiting period is 12 months until you can claim for maternity costs, whilst others specify that it is 12 months to conception.

Many insurers also put a waiting period on dental treatment. This can range from 6 months to 12 months. Most insurers will cover routine dental treatment immediately but special dental surgery e.g. orthodontics, will have a longer waiting period.
