What options for IVF treatment can you provide

Index of Questions

Question: My husband and I need to undergo IVF and the baby will be carried by a surragate for the term of the pregnancy... is there cover out there for this situation? We have researched and will probably need to travel to Thailand for this to proceed.

Answer:

We can provide international helth insurance plans that will offer you coverage for IVF. IVF plans will provide you with cover for specialist consultations, complimentary medicine, and diagnostic tests relating to infertility. A plan with an IVF benefit will limit you to a total of 4 IVF attempts during the policyholder’s lifetime. This number also includes any previous IVF treatments that you may have received prior to enrolling in the plan. Each IVF attempt will typically be covered up to a maximum of USD $3750.

It is important to note that the IVF plans that we can provide will not cover any of the surrogacy fees that may be payable to the surrogate mother. In addition to this, a plan that covers yourself and your husband will not provide medical protection to the surrogate, and as such, in order to provide her and the newborn child with the healthcare treatment that they need in the event that anything should go wrong. As a result of this it is advisable that the surrogate mother is covered by her own international health ensurance policy, as this will ensure that both the child and she will receive the best medical treatment available in the event of a complication in the pregnancy.

IVF and Maternity plans will always have a waiting period attached to the coverage, and these are 18 months and 10 months respectably. This means that before you can claim for any IVF related treatment you must have been enrolled in the plan for 18 months, and you must have been a policyholder for 10 months before you can claim for any maternity related expenses. In addition to this, IVF plans will only cover the delivery and newborn costs if the mother is expecting one child. If more than one child is expected then the delivery costs will not be covered and the children will only receive medical protection for the first 3 months of their lives up to a financial limit of USD $ 37,500; after this limit has been reached the parents must then submit an application to the insurance company for continuing coverage.
