What are the differences between local and international health insurance?

Index of Questions

Question: How does the global insurance factor with Medicare in the U.S. We are 65 and 66 and travel to and from US and Costa Rica. We neither have any pre-existing conditions and are healthy. We currently have a company in the U.S. as our Plan B on our Medicare, but they do not cover insurance outside the country.

Answer:

There are many differences between local health insurance (the plan you are currently on with Medicare) and international health insurance, the primary one being that international health insurance plans are globally portable while local health insurance is not. As a policyholder this gives you the freedom to choose where you want to receive treatment rather than having to use pre selected hospitals or medical facilities. The other main difference between a local health insurance plan is the fact that international health insurance plans calculate premiums based on the policyholders age and the geographical area of coverage that they require, rather than on their claims history. This means that no matter how much medical treatment you receive and claim for, you will always pay the same premium as everyone else in your age group.

Typically an international health insurance plan will afford you a larger number of options than a local plan. Optional policy benefits can include out-patient, dental, and emergency evacuation coverage; and in many cases it is your choice as to what your policy will cover. This means that your are normally afforded more options with an international health insurance plan than a local plan, giving you the exact levels of coverage that you require. International health insurance plans are also guaranteed renewable for life no matter what conditions you may have developed while on the policy. This is extremely different from most local medical insurance plans, as many of these policies will limit the age at which a policyholder can renew the plan, or restrict the coverage that the policy offers.

Generally, international health insurance is much more versatile than local health insurance and will give you the protection that you require in the USA, Costa Rica, or anywhere else in the world that you may choose to visit. With an international health insurance plan you are guaranteed the coverage that you need no matter where you are.

Hi, My mom will be coming from north africa to visit me in the USA and stay for acouple of weeks. Recently she has been having a heavy hand and legs feeling. She has been prescribed a medication that is usualy prescribed for patients with mild parkinson's. I would like to get some second opinion and test(scans) performed on her in the USA. I don't think that she has parkinson's and I would like to confirn this in a center/hospital that I trust. My mom has an inssurance coverage with mutuelle Maroc, which is a partner with SwissLife and AXA. I wonder if she can get an international coverage with your company that will covers specialist evaluation, MRI, and oether scans if necessary. Thank you
