Can you offer newborn coverage in Australia | ||

Question: My brother and his wife are expecting a baby in December. She is on a post-doc assignment in Sydney. Their baby has been diagnosed with a fairly congenital heart condition. He will need a corrective procedure upon his birth. Their ex-pat insurance does not cover the costs that will be associated with in-patient care for this procedure. What advice might you have on getting supplemental insurance for his post-natal care? Answer:We can offer international health insurance policies all over the world that will provide you with a high level of protection against all unforeseen circumstances. We can offer international health insurance plans with a maternity benefit that will provide coverage for your child in the event that the infant is born with any medical conditions. It is important to note however that both the maternity and newborn child coverage benefits that we can offer will always be attached to a waiting period. In the case of a newborn coverage benefit the shortest waiting period that we can offer is 6 months from the start of the plan. This means that only if the child is born after you have been on a plan for 6 months will you be able to claim for any congenital birth defects or medical conditions. Newborn child cover is usually offered in one of two ways. The first is with a “free benefit for the child” and will provide coverage for a newborn infant free of charge until a predetermined limit, the limit is usually either a specific length of time (the first 30 days of the child’ life) or a financial limit (the coverage will have a limit of up to $50,000). After the free benefit limit has been reached you must apply to the insurance company for continuing coverage for the child. The second option in regards to newborn coverage is when you have the child “born into the plan”. This allows the child the same benefits as the mother and will provide quality medical coverage no matter what the state of the infant’s health at birth. Usually with the “born into the plan” benefit the parents will simply have to notify the insurance company of the birth within a specific amount of time after it has happens. It is important to note that when you have a child “born into the plan” it will increase the overall policy premium. We work with some of the worlds biggest international insurance companies and are able to offer a number of options in regards to maternity coverage anywhere in the world.
