Can you offer coverage for individuals with Downs syndrome

Index of Questions

Question: Do you cover someone suffering from Down Syndrome? Could you send me a table of premium rates and coverages for Hospitalization and Surgical plan? Thank you

Answer:

In many cases it can be difficult to obtain coverage for an individual with Downs Syndrome. A person suffering from a genetic condition will usually have to be born into a plan in order to receive coverage. In some circumstances it is possible to join a group plan where the individual’s medical history is disregarded.

The option to have a child born into a plan is usually attached to a maternity benefit. If the individual suffering from Downs Syndrome is born into a plan then they will be offered coverage for life, as plans are guaranteed renewable.

Conditions such as Downs Syndrome and Muscular Dystrophy are considered by many international health insurance plans to be pre-existing. As these conditions require a large amount of care and can lead to a number of other symptoms or illnesses, the options in regards to covering these conditions are limited. Having a child born into a plan will ensure that any conditions an infant may be born with will be covered.
