Question: Hi there, I was just wondering if you can help me. I am a British Overseas Territory citizen who recently moved from Manchester, England to the United States. I resided in Manchester for two years and moved here only recently to live with my fiancĂ©- the expectant father of my child. I had begun my treatment at the ST Mary\'s Children\'s Hospital in Manchester but could not continue due to expenses and living costs. I am now here, he is a citizen and I am not and I having trouble getting insurance to cover my medical bills. Will I be eligible for this plan and can you suggest what I should if I am not? Thanks. Answer: We can offer international health insurance plans for expatriates anywhere in the world. Plans that we can provide are globally portable and guaranteed renewable for life, this gives you the assurance that no matter where you may go in the future your plan will travel with you. The maternity plans that we can offer have extremely high levels of cover and will usually provide coverage for the delivery and newborn child. It is important to note however, that maternity plans will always be attached to a waiting period. The shortest maternity waiting period that we can offer is 10 months from the start of the plan. This means that until you have been on the plan 10 months you cannot claim for any maternity treatment. Maternity plans will usually offer a benefit for the newborn infant in the event that the child is born with any health conditions or congenital birth defects. This benefit is also attached to a waiting period; however the waiting period is usually shorter than that of the maternity benefit. The shortest newborn child benefit waiting period that we can provide is six months from the start of the plan. Newborn child coverage is important as it will protect you child in the event that they need medical treatment at birth. International health insurance plans will usually offer two options in regards to a newborn child benefit and these are “free benefit for the child”, and “Child born into the plan”. In the event that you choose a free benefit, the plan will cover the infant up to a predetermined time or financial limit (typically the first 30 days of life or US$30,000). After the limit has been reached you must make an application to the insurance company for continuing coverage. If the child is born into the plan then they will be guaranteed continuing cover no matter what the state of their health is at birth. International health insurance plans that we offer will provide a number of benefits outside of maternity and newborn child coverage including protection for out-patient treatment, specialist consultations, emergency evacuation and repatriation, alternative therapies and medicines, and dental treatment. Plan premiums are always calculated based on the policyholder’s age and geographical area of coverage and never on your claims history, so no matter how much medical treatment you receive you will always be paying the same premium as everyone else in your age group.
