Naturopathic techniques are largely based on trial and error. Naturopaths rely on historical documentation that certain remedies work. These treatments have been proven by science to work, but naturopaths have been using them for decades because of historical documentation.

Many naturopathic treatments do lack credibility within the scientific community. The use of crystals to heal a person, for example, has no scientific foundation. These treatments have been described as holistic placebos, they work because the patient wants them to work.
