First Aid advice for- Fractures & Dislocations
A fracture is a broken or cracked bone. It may be diagnosed by being felt or heard, by pain, difficulty in moving, tenderness, swelling, bruising, deformity or symptoms of shock.
Your international health insurance cover will pay for the cost of treatment but the earlier the injury can be treated the better. The keynote of first aid treatment is to prevent movement.
Treat all fractures in position found if possible. If the injured has international health insurance cover then their removal to hospital is likely to be imminent, so gently support the injured part by hand, place the casualty in a comfortable position, and support with rolled up blankets.
It is essential that any difficulty in breathing, severe bleeding and unconsciousness must be dealt with before broken bones.
If transportation is delayed, immobilise the injured part by securing it to a sound part of the body with padding and bandages, arm to body, leg to leg. Then administer treatment for shock. Ensure that on the way to the hospital the provider of the patient’s international health insurance cover is notified so they can call ahead to the hospital to guarantee payment.
Dislocations
A dislocation is a displacement of one or more bones at a joint and most frequently happens at the shoulder, elbow, thumb, finger or jaw. It should be treated by a doctor under the patient’s international health insurance cover but can usually be diagnosed due to the inability to move the joint, pain, swelling and bruising. If in doubt, treat as a fracture and follow these guidelines:
- Make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
- Seek medical aid.
- Support the injured part in the most comfortable position with pillows or cushions. Immobilise with bandages or slings if available.
- Treat as for shock.
- Do not attempt to place bones in proper positions.

| Hi, My mom will be coming from north africa to visit me in the USA and stay for acouple of weeks. Recently she has been having a heavy hand and legs feeling. She has been prescribed a medication that is usualy prescribed for patients with mild parkinson's. I would like to get some second opinion and test(scans) performed on her in the USA. I don't think that she has parkinson's and I would like to confirn this in a center/hospital that I trust. My mom has an inssurance coverage with mutuelle Maroc, which is a partner with SwissLife and AXA. I wonder if she can get an international coverage with your company that will covers specialist evaluation, MRI, and oether scans if necessary. Thank you | |
